Extract from a Private Journal

3:17 a.m.

The Bell rang tonight when no one was there.

No wind.

No rope pulled.

No one near it.

Three students woke gasping at the same time. I know because one of them was across the hall. She said she dreamed she was falling.

I didn’t dream.

I was awake. And when the bell rang, I felt something drain – not from me, but from the air.

Zymura says I’m imagining things.

But her silver rings looked brighter this morning.

Too bright.

I’m beginning to wonder if the bell doesn’t call people.

Maybe it measures them.

If something can weaken magic without touching it…how would we ever see it happening?

Would you notice if your strength was fading – one quiet ring at a time?
